Birding Courses

Thank you very much for your interest in my birding courses. The objective of my course is to provide a fun, yet educational introduction to birding for both the experienced as well as novice birder. Birding is a wonderful forum where people of similar interests can meet, as well as become familiar with good birding locations in Ottawa and Eastern Ontario. The classes will focus on field identification, use of a field guide, use of optical equipment in the field an familiarizing you with a number of interesting birding locations and habitats. I strive to provide personal attention to all participants.

General Information

Thank you very much for your interest in my spring birding course. This spring, I will be offering two Beginner Courses.

Beginner’s Course
This Spring I’ll be offering two birding courses for the novice to more experienced beginner. Beginner’s Course I will be held mostly on Tuesday mornings and Beginner’s Course II mostly on Saturday mornings.   The objective of my course is to provide a fun, yet educational introduction to birding and I strive to provide personal attention to all participants.  It is also a wonderful forum where people with similar interests can meet and become familiar with good birding locations in Ottawa and eastern Ontario.  Each course is limited to 12 participants so register early.

The course consists of 9 trips, 7 locally and 2 out-of-town. With the advent of spring, a number of interesting species will be migrating to our region. During the field trips, we will be visiting diverse and interesting areas including Lake Deschenes, Shirley’s Bay, Britannia Conservation Area,  Carlsbad Springs, Cobb Lake Creek,  Dunrobin; the renowned Presqu’ile Provincial Park for its interesting water birds; and Chaffeys Lock area for its rare breeding species.  On each trip I will try to focus on a different group of birds i.e. waterfowl, grebes, loons, hawks, gulls, shorebirds and migrating land birds such as the brightly-coloured warblers.

I have a limited number of binoculars for loan, as well as scopes and field guides. If you are interested in using any optical equipment, please let me know in advance of the outing.
Remember to dress for the weather. Pack a snack and drink for short trips, and a lunch and snacks for our full day trip.

The designated meeting time is the DEPARTURE TIME. Please arrive at least 15 minutes earlier. Carpooling is encouraged. Fewer cars on the road means we are able to cover more area in less time.   If you are carpooling, please remember to make an equitable contribution to the driver for gas.
All trips are a go - rain or shine!
* Please note- birding locations are subject to change – we go where the birds go! *
