Birding Courses

Thank you very much for your interest in my birding courses. The objective of my course is to provide a fun, yet educational introduction to birding for both the experienced as well as novice birder. Birding is a wonderful forum where people of similar interests can meet, as well as become familiar with good birding locations in Ottawa and Eastern Ontario. The classes will focus on field identification, use of a field guide, use of optical equipment in the field an familiarizing you with a number of interesting birding locations and habitats. I strive to provide personal attention to all participants.

General Information

Overview of Course:
The winter course consists of 6 local field trips, and one full day trip to the Kingston area. The spring courses consists of 9 local field trips, and one full day trip to Presqu'ile Provincial Park.

Transportation & Logistics:
To help reduce the number of vehicles on field trips, car-pooling is recommended. The designated meeting time is the DEPARTURE TIME. Please arrive at least 15 minutes earlier so carpooling can be organized.  If you are driving with another participant, please remember to make an equitable contribution to the driver for gas.

Field Equipment & Guides:
For these courses, it is not essential that you have binoculars or a field guide. I have some equipment and field guides for loan. Please let me know in advance if you require any optical equipment.

What to Bring:
Classes go rain or shine, so it is important that you dress for the weather.  Bring drinks and snacks for shorter outings and also bring a lunch for full-day outings.

Participation:
These courses are limited to registered participants.

The course consists of 8 trips, 7 locally and 1 out-of-town. With the advent of spring, a number of interesting species will be migrating to our region. On each trip I will try to focus on a different group of birds (e.g. waterfowl, grebes, loons, hawks, gulls, shorebirds and migrating land birds such as the brightly coloured warblers). The birding locations indicated are subject to change: we go where the birds go!
